Fix laptop display brightness for Nvidia GPUs on Debian Linux

If you are having trouble with your laptop display brightness on Linux and your main GPU is Nvidia, this kernel parameter might fix it!

Note: this will only resolve issues with Nvidia gpus; it won’t have any impact on Intel or AMD gpus at all! You are free to try it (it won’t hurt anything) but it won’t do a thing.

The kernel param is nvidia.NVreg_RegistryDwords=EnableBrightnessControl=1

Here’s how I found the solution: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/brightness-not-working-ubuntu-20-04-lenovo-legion-5-15imh05/178058/17

  1. As someone with a Dell G5 5590 with the same exact GPU, this display-brightness issue doesn't occur on Mint.
What driver version are you on? As I know Debian is a tad behind when it comes to updates. I'm currently on 510.47.03

  2. Hey you guys ~ I hope this helps someone because I spend weeks searching for the solution to this! I guess I just wasn't Googling the correct keywords haha.
The kernel param is this: nvidia.NVreg_RegistryDwords=EnableBrightnessControl=1. You can test it before adding it to your bootloader config by editing the bootloader entry like I did in the video.
